Traffic Police engages motorbike operators on road safety rules
BY PRISCILLA BEN - Thyolo, Malawi (25/07/2023): Motorbike operators at Thunga Trading Centre in Thyolo District have been advised to follow traffic rules as one way of preventing road accidents.
This initiative if intensified will help to curb road accidents involving motorbike operators and resonates with concerns raised by some health workers that health facilities are congested with victims of road accidents most of them caused by motorcycle riders.
Speaking recently (22/07/2023) during an interactive session, Thyolo Police Station Traffic Sub-Inspector Kennedy Hawa, says they decided to meet and impact information on road safety rules to motorcycle operators because most accidents on the roads of Malawi involve them.
Sub Inspector Hawa, says, they believe, the information disseminated will assist the riders to observe road safety rules hence reduction of road accidents.
“It was very important to interact with motorbike operators on road safety issues including how to avoid and report accidents,” he explains.
According to Hawa, motorbike riders were also sensitized on the importance of having all essential documents namely: insurance certificate, licence; citing, these documents are required whenever accidents occur.
Traffic officials from the station urges the motorbike operators to always wear reflector clothes during night to help other road users to see them.
Edgar Banda, one of the motorbike operators from Mpine Village traditional authority (T/A) Bvumbwe, Thyolo, says the interaction with the traffic police accorded them an opportunity to learn about the road safety rules, and therefore commend the police for the engagement.
