Lilongwe Market Traders to rollout HIV and gender based violence awareness project
BY PRISCILLA BEN - Lilongwe, Malawi (25/07/2023): Lilongwe Market Traders Community Based Organization says it will rollout a project that is aimed at providing information on the importance of adhering to HIV and AIDS preventative measures, encouraging those on ART to continue treatment and fight gender related violence at business place.
The organization is preparing to start implementation of a project called ‘HIV and AIDS and Gender based Violence Awareness which will target traders in all Lilongwe City markets and will be spearheaded by volunteers who happen to be traders in these markets.
Speaking during the project’s preparatory meeting in Lilongwe, Alex Phodogoma, Chairperson for the organization says, the purpose of the gathering was in two folds: firstly, to welcome new project volunteers from 12 markets in Lilongwe city whom the organization will be working with; secondly, to inform them about their role which will be to disseminate HIV and AIDS information, raising awareness on the importance of taking ART medications and also help identify victims of gender based violence in the markets for counselling.
The organization targets the following markets: Lilongwe City Central, Tsoka, Kanengo, Wakawaka, Msungwi, Area3, Chinsapo, Chilinde, Area23, Kaliyeka and Matchanse.
Phodogoma says the organisation will work hand in hand with National Aids Commission in implementing this project.
