Increased theft cases at funeral vigils worries Lilongwe Police

Lilongwe-Malawi: Police in the Capital City have expressed concern over increased cases of theft of handbags containing electrical gadgets such as laptops, mobile phones handsets and cash, among others, at funerals.

The concern is coming against a background of huge number of reported cases at Lilongwe Police Station on the same, mostly perpetrated by female suspects, targeting unsuspecting female victims.

The most recent incident was reported over the weekend from Chinsapo where cash and gadgets all valued at K3.8 million were stolen during a single night while owners were fast asleep at a funeral.

Mostly, the criminals present themselves as members of the bereaved family, or as church faithfuls dressed in the same uniform as that of women members from various denominations.

In some instances, these criminals wait and board funeral procession vehicles from Kamuzu Central Hospital mortuary where the bereaved collect the remains of their departed loved ones

Such conducts have been on the rise particularly in Lilongwe prompting Lilongwe Police to urge mourners and others who attend funerals to be extra vigilant and mindful of this new wave of theft in town.

The law enforcers have since initiated a measure to curb the vice by engaging block leaders, chiefs, church leaders in a 'know your neighbor' awareness campaign which requires pronouncements at funerals for attendees to identify themselves and a person sitting next to them..
