Teenager drowns in Lilongwe River
BY PRISCILLA BEN. LILONGWE: A teenager identified as Steven Yang’anani on Sunday September 17, 2023 drowned in Lilongwe River while attempting to take a bath.
According to Lilongwe Police Publicist Inspector Hasting Chigalu, the incident happened in Dingaliro Village in Traditional Authority (TA) Masula where a grazing area is located along the river.
On the material day, the deceased and his friend, Joseph Masautso, both employed as cattle herdsmen, took their flock for grazing.
At around 11:00 hours, the pair decided to go and take a bath in the river as they always do.
Unfortunately, Steven went under water and could not re-emerge a scenario which prompted Joseph to dash out of the water and call for help.
The community members responded and instituted a search that lasted for a while, resulting in the discovery and retrieving of Steven’s body.
Detectives from Mitundu Police, accompanied by medical personnel from Mitundu Community Hospital visited the scene and confirmed the incident.
Post mortem results revealed that death was due to suffocation.
The deceased hailed from Chikwera Village, T/A Kalolo in Lilongwe district.
